John Evans, Varsity Head Coach

Coach Evans joins us for his 8th season as Head Coach and his 9th overall with the softball program. Before joining the softball program, he was a member of the Walton Football staff where he coached the Offensive Line and ran the Strength and Conditioning program. Coach Evans is also the Head Boys Tennis Coach and has been for the past 18 seasons with State Titles in 2015 and 2022. Before coming to Walton, Coach Evans was on the football staff at East Hall High School in Gainesville, GA for 3 years where he also graduated in 1992 and lettered in football, wrestling, and baseball. He has been at Walton for 22 years. Coach Evans is married to Vicki (2 years) and has three children: Preston Junior at UGA, Mollie 10th grade, and Peyton 5th grade. Austin Driskell, JV Head Coach

Coach Driskell is joining the Walton Softball program for his first year on staff. In addition to softball, Coach Driskell is also a JV coach for Baseball at Walton. Before coming to Walton, Coach Driskell coached at East Paulding High School for 5 years as the head JV Baseball Coach. He brings 7 years of coaching experience and 2 years of college ball experience. Having played and coached baseball through the years, he is excited to start a new chapter in the Walton Softball program as well as supporting students in the Special Education Program. Coach Driskell and his wife Abby live in Kennesaw with their dog, Storm.  

Joanna Kay, Varsity Assistant Coach

Coach Kay joins us for her third season as Varsity Assistant Coach. In addition to softball, Coach Kay heads up the Girls’ Strength and Conditioning programs for multiple sports and is the Head Coach for Varsity Girls’ Flag Football as well as Co-Head Coach For Track & Field. Before coming to Walton, Coach Kay coached at St. Pius, her alma mater, Mount Vernon, and most recently, Westminster where she served as the Varsity Head Coach. She brings 15 years of coaching experience from softball alone. Having coached a variety of sports over the years, she is excited to return for another great season on Raider Mountain and getting back in the classroom as a Health & PE teacher. Ashley Charles, JV Assistant Coach

This is Coach Charles’ 5th year teaching Math at Walton; her 19th year teaching overall. She grew up in East Cobb and graduated from Pope High School where she played softball and swam. In college, she swam for her club team. Coach Charles graduated from the University of Mississippi with a bachelor’s in Secondary Mathematics Education and taught up north (New York City and New Jersey) after graduation. She moved back to Georgia 8 years ago and before coming to Walton, worked at Marist High School where she coached softball and swimming. This will be her first year with the Walton softball program and 4th year with the Walton Swim and Dive team. Additionally, Coach Charles started the middle school swim and dive program for Walton (Jr Raiders). She has two children (Shay-3rd and Cruz-5th) who you will see around Raider Mountain this fall. Coach Charles spends her summers on the Jersey Shore and is excited to join the softball program this year!
